Didactic Discussions

CFW_WaltherThe photo to the right is of C.F.W. Walther, a founder of the LCMS and its Seminary in St. Louis as a reminder that this class is ‘old school’ Lutheran Theology…perhaps as presented in your Grandfather’s Church! The word ‘theology’ is literally Theos, Greek for ‘God’ plus Logos which means ‘Word’ and since worship is centered around the ‘Word who became flesh’ and His words….this class is intended to enrich the hearing of the words of worship.

As you may know, each Sunday our worship follows the Church Calendar and Lectionary, which recommends three or more pericopes. A pericope is “a cutting-out” of bible verses that forms one coherent unit or thought, used for reading in our worship service.

These ‘readings’ are generally taken from the Revised Common Lectionary that most liturgical churches use today.

The goal of this class is to provide background and insight for these verses, so the Early Service member receives further information on what they have just heard, and the Late Service member considers this information as they are about to hear these scriptures in worship.

Please do not be put off by the name of this class, as it is purely provocative and in jest. The class is actually informal and is a light hearted explanation of the readings in common terms. The content is derived from Concordia Seminary’s Exogetical department, Luther‘s teachings, and accepted Bible Commentaries.

This week’s scripture readings may be read here: Pericopes
